Nigeria 2025: Key Highlights from January 1st

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command reported significant progress in combating crime during 2024, securing 128 convictions and rescuing 98 victims of kidnap and “one chance” robbery. They highlighted achievements in various areas, including armed robbery, cybercrime, and homicide.

Former Kaduna Commissioner of Finance and Local Governments, Mohammed Bashir Sa’idu, was arrested by the police on charges of money laundering, criminal breach of trust, and misappropriation of public funds. The arrest followed a petition alleging Sa'idu misappropriated N3 billion in state funds.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reminded Nigerians to actively combat corruption in the New Year, emphasizing that progress and economic advancement depend on public commitment to ethical conduct. They encouraged citizens to reject bribery, extortion, and other forms of financial impropriety.

Nigeria officially requested the extradition of Simon Ekpa, a Biafra activist, from Finland. The Nigerian government has provided the necessary documents to Finnish authorities in their effort to bring Ekpa back to Nigeria on charges related to terrorism and incitement to violence.

A cab driver in Rivers State, Andrew Nwanna, was arrested by the police for robbing a female passenger. Police say the suspect diverted the passenger's route, attacked her, and stole her two phones.
